Peacemaking is my preaching jam

I preach at my church sometimes – this last Sunday, given the upcoming holidays and possible holiday “drama”, I was really burdened to talk about Peacemaking. If you missed it give it a listen. (it’s the recording from the early service, I think I was more confident the second time around)

Jesus says that people who make peace are happy and fortunate because they look like God. (my paraphrase of Matt 5.9) – It’s a promise that raise as many questions as answers. What is the right way to make peace? We’re going to take some time this morning and look at the biblical model of Peacemaker Ministries. and look at how in all of life’s complexities and conflicts we can be people who make peace by acting like our Savior.

Our youth group kids are hilarious – a couple weeks ago we had (for Columbus day) a Video Scavenger Hunt around Huntington Village. It seemed like an appropriate way of honoring a famous explorer. I’m really thankful to the leaders, especially EmLam who made it all happen – but enjoy these – our kids are hilarious.

Long Island Water (beaches/baths & Baby)

The upside of living on and Island is that it’s surrounded by water. (there’s a quotable) We’ve had a lot of fun taking Colette to the Fire Island Light House – (several times actually). Last week we wanted to take her again but Field 5 of Robert Moses was closed from the hurricane damage – so we parked at field 3 and walked to field 5… you Long Islanders will appreciate why we didn’t want to walk to the light house after that. Colette loves being at the beach… now that I think about it we’ve been there every week for going on 5 weeks now – one night we switched her white noise app (yeah, we’re geeks) to a beach noise… and instead of falling to sleep, she stared giggling and moving her arms and legs fast.

Sam’s Beach Tweet: Dear little boy babies… Colette loves really long walks on the beach. This will be good to know in about 25 years when she can date.

We also finally took a day trip to went to Montauk where we walked around the shops and spent time at the Point Lighthouse. Colette has been really fun to take around – she loves the beach and enjoys looking around constantly.

Everyday adventures – Colette around the house and around Brooklyn

So we’ve discovered that if you have a dog and a baby that both enjoy constant attention, there’s a way of putting that to your advantage. (also when the dog is pretty odd looking it helps). Ashley took some pictures of Colette around the back yard – she is a cutie. – always looking around to discover new things – she does have an amazed look pretty often… also we find it funny to make up dialogue for her. (caption contest much?) She (like women in cafes) find her baby feet fascinating - she will spend a long time grabbing them.

Last Thursday we went to one of our favorite places in Brooklyn – the new DUMBO park. We came for the pizza and the view, but discovered, quite randomly, that it was movie night. The lawn was filled with Brooklynites and guests to watch Spike Lee’s Crooklyn. Spike Lee was there in person to introduce it to us. Colette really loved it (it was a little odd) until she got too tired (about half way through.)

Colette visits Wildlife & Ecology Center

Having a baby is a ticket to new and different adventures. – Some of them are scary (I do sometimes sent pix of poop bombs to teenage guys for kicks) some of them are adorable (like watching a line form at Panara of older women who want to see the baby’s feet) and some are just normal fun. – Today (Saturday) we took Colette to the Wildlife & Ecology Center in Brookhaven. It was a case of parents having more fun than the baby, but it was fun to be with family and to see some animals up close and personal. – Highlights – me trying to convince people that there was a weekly raffle to win a free baby goat (a kid?)… no one fell for it. Army John trying to disobey all signs (feeding forbidden things… etc) Noah staring down the black bears. – A fun time.

Summer Highlights… Above Gray Skies

We (finally?) had a backyard concert at our house a couple Sunday nights ago – we were really happy to host the band Above Gray Skies – for a night of friends, food and great music and worship. The band was really great – perfect for an outdoor feel. They were a lot of fun to host and to have around. I was so happy for all of our friend and church family who came to spend a very humid evening with us. – if you missed it – we’ll have to do something again next summer

Colette Life Tour Weeks 5-6 :-)

Colette’s Third Week

So we all made it three weeks now – here are some new pictures. The weather on Long Island has been amazing this week giving us a change to explore the Village (and almost run into the lead singer from AC/DC) and Caumsett Park (I love that place!), and spend some time Melissa, Jamie, and Noah. It’s been pretty fun.

Colette’s fourth day (Monday)

Mondays are nice at our house. After her first night home (not a ton of sleep), Colette spend her first day getting to know the surroundings and animals, furniture, routine (hopefully?) and people who are a part of our home. Also she learned that she has to play the piano… it’s grand.
